INTRODUCTION TO THE NATIONAL SEED CONGRESS

• As we know that seed is the basic requirement for a plant to grow. For the feasible agricultural production, it is necessary to have the quality seeds.

• Botanically seed is a fertilized ovule containing the embryo for future life.

• For a good production we require a quality seed having a good germination percentage and vigourness.

• It is estimated that on an average a seed quality contributes about 15 to 20 % in the crop production. High-quality seeds are the foundation of successful farming, ensuring that all the hard work yields give fruitful results.

• Once the breeder develops a variety, it is essential to maintain the seed quality for successive generation. For that purpose, seed multiplication should be done under a supervision of a skilled breeders.

• So, it is essential to make and revise the policies directly or indirectly effecting the seed health. For this purpose, National Seed Congress is proposed to delve into the core of rice seed production and its distribution across the country.

• NSC has a key concept of bringing together stakeholders across the seed value chain to address the most pressing issues facing by the sector.
